Trouble on the Terraces. Arsenal v West Ham at Highbury 1982. icf ?

It was the end of an era, and West Ham never again ventured onto Arsenal’s North Bank. Clouds of thickening smoke billowed across the pitch and pandemonium broke out. The Arsenal fans sensed this and attacked immediately, and their rivals were kicked and punched and quickly dispatched from the sprawling terrace, which when full could hold up to 20,000 people. West Ham had always had a large trouble making following, and had a particularly large and violent gang called the Inter City Firm (ICF), named after their fondness of travelling to away games First Class on the Inter City Trains, and were generally thought of as the top gang in the Country. 1982 and an English football (soccer) match was not always a pleasant event to attend. Arsenal versus West Ham was always likely to be a major flashpoint. this year was to be different, and there was a very uneasy feeling as I stood on the North Bank on this particular sunny Spring Saturday. May 2nd 1982, an hour and a half before the kick off and the fans were streaming into the ground. Nowadays, thankfully the only winners on match days are the police. Sadly, this was not an end to the trouble on this particular day, and about an hour later an Arsenal fan was surrounded by a gang of West Ham thugs, and brutally stabbed to death. There they were, the largest most vicious gang of football thugs in the country doing what they did best, bullying and taunting their beaten rivals. If you are interested in watching an Arsenal game, visit www.hubpages.com/hub/How-to-get-Arsenal-tickets-at-face-value for ideas on buying face value Arsenal tickets.. However. Not all of Arsenal’s fans had panicked, and the next thing they launched a counter attack, and probably for the first time in their lives, the ICF were on the back foot, and were brutally pushed right to the edge of the North Bank. Having been part of the hooligan scene years before, I could tell who was who, and I could see the West Ham fans gathering on the North Bank. His killer was never caught, but folklore has it that he himself has also gone to meet his maker. This ultimately led to several undercover police operations, and many of the main players were arrested and subsequently charged. This left the large West Ham gang cock a hoop in the middle of Arsenal territory. And in the following years, Arsenal were known to have taken liberties on West Ham’s Manor, a feat previously unheard of since the old skinhead days of the late 60′s. Arsenal, although they had seemed to be successful in breaking free from the Skinhead element which had plagued the club in the late 60′s, were not without their own violent followers, and had an up and coming young street gang known as the Gooners, a spoof name for the official club nickname of the ‘Gunners’. The players, who had just about started the game, were led off the pitch, and panicking Arsenal fans stampeded onto it for their own safety. And premiership matches, although missing the old boisterous atmosphere, are much safer places to be, with attendances on the increase, and families very much in attendance. As the police battled to gain control, another West Ham gang had forced their way into the middle of the North Bank and set off a smoke bomb. Only, something was wrong. It was a couple of years before Maggie Thatcher’s clampdown on the activities of Soccer Hooligans and the gangs were becoming more vicious and more willing to use a frightening array of weaponry, which was only too obvious at this particular game. In the preceding years it was common practice for the ICF to march onto the North Bank, which was the Arsenal stronghold virtually unopposed, with very little resistance from Arsenal’s followers. The police desperately fought to surround the ICF for their own protection, and despite numerous attempts by the gooners to attack again, the police line held firm, and the ICF were held until the final whistle, and then escorted to safety

Aishwarya Rai’s Daughter a Chelsea Fan Already Says Abhishek

Aishwarya Rai has never shown an inclination one way or the other towards any sports teams, but for the sake of peace on match day lets hope she supports the Blues as much as her husband does!

And now hes gifted his newborn baby daughter something close to his heart: a tiny blue Chelsea jersey.. Jersey and all!! he tweeted playfully to a fan who perhaps somewhat foolheartedly suggested Abhishek allow his daughter to support Manchester United.

Both are diehard Chelsea fans.

http://www.sportszest.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/chelsea_fc.jpgTheres no word what the missus thinks of all of this. Its no secret that Abhishek Bachchan is a big Chelea supporter; he was the first fan to get his hands on the clubs new jersey, takes in games at Stamford Bridge every time hes in London and even worked the legendary football club into his film Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

Aishwarya Rais daughter may have come home in a pink blanket but Abhis making sure she learns early that a little girls true color is blue.

Amitabh Bachchan mentioned in his blog this week that Aishwarya Rais daughter takes after her mother when it comes to looks, but now its clear that Beti B will be a spitting image of her father in at least one regard:

And shes already a BLUE

2014 World Cup: Day 2 – Live Blogs & Updates

Even at this level, you need to do your shoes up properly!

Silva almost jinks through the defence but is crowded out – another half-chance goes begging.

Iniesta now dribbles into the area and tries to find Silva, but Netherlands put it out for a corner.

Pass Attempts: Spain 201 Netherlands 92

The man, the myth, the bundle of angry energy that is Sergio Ramos can’t connect with the corner, and it’s a goal kick.

Spain have so many options that it’s difficult to call, but I’d go with Cesc or Torres on around 60 minutes if it stays like this.

De Guzman is in the book…

Wow, yet more controversy…

Diego Costa shapes for a shot and drags the ball back, and is caught by a sliding challenge – it looks soft…

GOAL! Spain 1-0 Netherlands (Alonso pen ’26)

. Neither side has gotten into a real flow so far.

Alex – presumably because he elected to play for Spain rather than Brazil – it’d didn’t go down well at all.

Costa shanks an effort well wide from out on the right now – the Netherlands are looking comfortable in defence so far.

Arjen Robben’s boot has come off, and he’s taking his time with the laces.

Now Van Persie backs into Ramos and gives away a free kick

Bayern confirm deal to sign midfielder Vidal | Reuters

What is missing is the medical and the signature of the contract,” Rummenigge told reporters during the team’s trip to China.

“Bastian Schweinsteiger was named football god by the fans. There is nothing true in this (reports),” he said.

“If everything goes according to plan, he can start training next week,” he added, without giving details of a fee or length of contract for the versatile player. We are charged with setting up a team that can be successful and play attractive football,” Rummenigge added.

“I can confirm that we have with both parties, Juventus and the player, reached an agreement.

BERLIN Bayern Munich have reached an agreement with Italy’s Juventus to sign Chile international midfielder Arturo Vidal, the German club’s CEO Karl Heinz Rummenigge confirmed on Thursday.

He did, however, dismiss reports claiming the club was considering letting attacking midfielder Thomas Mueller join Schweinsteiger at Old Trafford.

“There are some players who just do not have a price tag. Maybe Thomas Mueller takes over this name now.”

Vidal, no stranger to the Bundesliga having played for Bayer Leverkusen for four seasons until 2011, has won four straight Italian league titles and helped Juventus reach the Champions League final last season, where they lost to Barcelona.. We have to wait and take smart decisions. We would have taken leave of our senses if we gave up such a player.

(Reporting by Karolos Grohmann; Editing by John O’Brien)

The 28-year-old, who also helped Chile win the Copa America title for the first time on home soil earlier this month, could join up with his Bayern team mates as early as next week, Rummenigge said.

The Bavarians, who recently sold club legend Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United, may not stop at Vidal and could still add to the squad this pre-season.

“It is still too early to close the door and say that was it.

Vidal is set to become Bayern’s second major signing of the transfer window after Brazilian attacking midfielder Douglas Costa joined the club at the start of July

Matching up Spain’s and Brazil’s World Cup 2014 rosters – National Spain Football

But Cesar was once the best in the world and is intent on a good showing on home soil. Spain have the all-world and resurgent hero-scorer Ramos and his supporting cast is good, but Silva and Luis are as good as it gets in central defense. Spain takes the nod here too.

The starting eleven has been tinkered with little over the past several months but still has a player or two that may change depending upon the opponent and situation during the cup. Let’s break down the comparisons.

First, he must look to explore the far right side with Pedro, releasing his speed as the Brazilian focus continues on the other side. At defense Brazil have the advantage. The June 3rd tune up against Panama should give a clear indication of the coach’s thinking. Meanwhile, with the slow/fast tiki-taka rhythmic build up Spain prefers on offense, and their reliance on the ball handling of Iniesta, also on the left, Brazil will have time to defend and a side to cheat towards. This will force Silva and Luis out and open space behind them. But the outcome may well be as unexpected as it was the last time they met or the last time a World Cup final was played at the Maracana. So, why do I still think Spain will win in a fairly officiated game? Because player for player, position by position, the Iberians are overall smaller but better in more match-ups with the Brazilians. The casts–assuming all are healthy and there are minimal needed substituions–would be almost identical, and the pressures upon both squads comparably immense if a bit stronger on the hosts side. It would seem a stalemate on offense so far, but with a decided slant to Brazil given what Neymar alone, and Alves and Marcelo coming up, offer on attack.

These are tough tactics to implement for a full 90 minutes and which side breaks down in their respective discipline will go a long way toward determining who gets that needed break. If he is in inspirational form he will likely win the game on his own, by some creative spark. Ironically, despite the lack of other creative players, the nod on offense goes to Brazil.

Spain mostly need to guard against an inspired Neymar on the left side of attack, and avoid the type of Arbeloa blunder that left the Brazilian open for the killer 44th minute second goal in the Confederations Cup Final. The match clincher will be who breaks that balance first or best and here Neymar takes the nod for Brazil. Not too hard a task. Spain is better on defense and midfield and should thus stop most Brazilian attacks and build more scoring chances for themselves. Hulk and Neymar can then move in for the kill from both sides. Brazil, on the other hand, is the one most likely to play beyond their roster’s already high-level to achieve a breakthrough. Ramos may be played as the right fullback to support Azpilicueta should Neymar get by him. Third, he has to exploit the forward progress of the Brazilian wingbacks for space behind them on a counterattack.

In midfield, the defensive quartet of Paulinho and Gustavo on one side and Busquets and Alonso on the other might seem an even exchange, but with Oscar as the only mid trying to create from the middle against the likes of Iniesta, Xavi and whomever del Bosque adds, it is simply asking too much of the young Brazilian. Second, he will have to ask his midfielders to hook up with Torres, Silva, Fabregas, or Villa, in a much earlier give-and-go, the way Barcelona does with Messi, a good ways from goal. Coach Vicente del Bosque’s ultimate selections were:

Over three weeks ago Brazil’s coach, Luis Felipe Scolari, decided to end all speculation and lobbying by naming his 23-man squad well ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. But if the officials are willing to allow roughhousing, Brazil will find a way to their sixth cup win.

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Pepe Reina (Napoli), and David de Gea (Manchester United); defenders: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea), Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid), Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba (Barcelona), Javi Martinez (Bayern Munich), Raul Albiol (Napoli), and Juanfran Torres (Atletico Madrid); midfielders: Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and Cesc Fabregas (all Barcelona), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Santi Cazorla (Arsenal), David Silva (Manchester City), Koke (Atletico Madrid), and Juan Mata (Manchester United); and strikers: Pedro Rodriguez (Barcelona), Fernando Torres (Chelsea), David Villa and Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid).

When we compare attacking prowess, Neymar is the top star, but he is going against a defense that will be keying on him as the only real standalone scoring threat the way the Iberians will key in on Oscar as the only creative Brazilian midfielder. On the Brazilian side Hulk and Fred are not nimble enough to handle one-on-ones well and Fred’s 90 seconds-in, fortunate, opportunistic opening goal in the Confederation cup may not materialize again. In midfield, Sergio Busquets and Xabi Alonso as defensive mids will complement a movable feast of creative attacking choices that will include Iniesta, Xavi, Pedro, Torres, Villa, Fabregas, Silva, and Cazorla, who will be fitted together per game and opponent as is del Bosque’s want.

Yesterday, the final World Cup 2014 roster for the Spanish National Football Team was released on the team’s official webpage. He will look to keep Fred deeply into the Spanish defense in hopes of keeping Ramos occupied in his position and to force the slower Pique to take the last ditch, recuperating role. So who would win the cup between them? Spain will win if physicality is reduced to fair challenges since Brazil is the more physical side. Scolari has so far favored: Cesar in goal, Alves at right wingback and Marcelo on the left, Silva and Luiz as center backs, Gustavo, Oscar and Paulinho in midfield and Neymar, Hulk and Fred as strikers.

If we look at the keepers, Casillas takes the nod, he is still the best keeper in the world, despite both his blunder in the Champions League, and his lack of playing time in La Liga. Thus, del Bosque will have to mix things up to find at least three other ways in.. Alves and Marcelo are matches for Alba and Azpilicueta and these four will mostly balance each other out on both sides of the field with the Brazilians taking the nod on the offensive side.

So where does that leave us? I think Spain is the better team on paper, but they may not be able to play much beyond their true potential in South America. The starting eleven, which began to solidify as the tune up match against Bolivia concluded seems to be: Captain Casillas in goal, Ramos and Pique at center backs, with Azpilicueta on the right side and Jordi Alba on the left completing the defense. The 23 man squad includes 17 who participated on the winning World Cup 2010 team. He chose the following players:

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Toronto FC), Jefferson (Botafogo), and Victor (Atletico Mineiro); defenders: Dani Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Roma), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Maxwell and Thiago Silva (PSG), David Luiz (Chelsea), Dante (Bayern Munich), and Henrique (Napoli);midfielders: Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Hernanes (Inter Milan), Paulinho (Tottenham), Ramires, Willian, and Oscar (Chelsea), and Fernandinho (Manchester City); and strikers: Hulk (Zenit), Neymar (Barcelona), Fred (Fluminense), Jo (Atletico Mineiro), Bernard (Shakhtar).

Scolari will attempt to do the same countering down the right side, what with Alba’s penchant for forward progress. With Ramos as the major defensive obstacle, Scolari will also look to isolate the fullback by playing him out of position and attacking in either the space he leaves or on the side opposite where he has been drawn.

If these two teams were to meet in the finals we would have a titanic clash of both similar and different proportions to the one we had in the Confederations Cup Final just last summer
