FBI Probes NBA Referee’s Alleged Betting

“I think it’s a good thing that Las Vegas has the type of regulation that makes sure that bad things don’t happen.”

Benson said he didn’t work with Donaghy much.

Goodman argues that legalized gambling, monitored by the Nevada Gaming Commission, prevents these types of suspicious activities.

Kornegay said legal sports betting in Nevada represents a fraction of sports betting worldwide, with 98.5 percent of all action taken outside the state. “Those are people that you work with and that you literally — you spend more time with those people than you do with your family.”

The investigation first was reported Friday by the New York Post.

“We would like to assure our fans that no amount of effort, time or personnel is being spared to assist in this investigation, to bring to justice an individual who has betrayed the most sacred trust in professional sports, and to take the necessary steps to protect against this ever happening again.”

“Whispers would have happened on the street, and we would have heard something,” Kornegay said. The NBA, for example, discusses gambling at rookie orientation, even bringing in former mobster Michael Franceze to speak.

Defense attorney John Lauro confirmed Donaghy is under investigation but refused to comment on the allegations or the case.

“We haven’t seen anything like that in the NBA that I can remember,” he said, “and we haven’t been contacted by anybody.”

The FBI probe, which began recently, also involves allegations that the referee had connections to organized crime associates. Clayton cited a 2005 estimate by the National Gambling Impact Study Commission that found $380 billion is wagered on illegal sports betting, compared with $2.25 billion in legal sports betting in Nevada.

Jay Kornegay, executive director of the sports book at the Las Vegas Hilton, said he had never seen any unusual activity in NBA betting, and was surprised not to have heard about an investigation until Friday.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Donaghy officiated 68 games in the 2005-06 season and 63 games in 2006-07. … “Any type of suspicious or unusual movements, you usually hear in the industry. We’re so regulated and policed, any kind of suspicion would be discussed.

The referee had a gambling problem, according to the official, and was approached by low-level mob associates through an acquaintance.

“At this point, it’s too early to know if any games were affected,” Avello said, adding that no regulators or investigators had contacted him about the case.

According to a law enforcement official, authorities are examining whether the referee made calls to affect the point spread in games on which he or associates had wagered.

“We’re the only regulatory agency in the world that really looks at unusual activity as far as the movement of the line and that type of conduct,” he said. “However, we will continue to monitor them to ascertain whether there is any connection to Nevada’s licensed sports books.”

“As we previously stated, we have been cooperating with the FBI in their investigation of allegations that a single NBA referee bet on NBA games that he officiated,” commissioner David Stern said in a statement Friday afternoon.

“I’m shocked, terribly shocked,” said Gary Benson, an NBA official for 17 years who retired two years ago because of knee problems.

The law enforcement official, who spoke to the AP on Friday on condition of anonymity, said the referee was aware of the investigation and had made arrangements to surrender as early as next week to face charges. He also worked 20 playoff games, including five last season.

Although asked by the government not to comment, Stern said the naming of Donaghy prompted a fuller statement.

Gambling long has been a problem in sports, and leagues have made a point of educating players of the potential pitfalls. Other arrests are expected, the official said.

The law enforcement official said the bets involved thousands of dollars and were made on games during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons.

. The official, who did not identify the referee, is familiar with the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about the ongoing investigation.

Nevada gambling regulators were not involved in an investigation and had no information about the allegations, said Jerry Markling, enforcement chief for the state Gaming Commission and Gaming Control Board.

“You have a lot of acquaintances and very few friends. I probably worked a handful of games with him overall, just a handful.”

Veteran oddsmaker John Avello, at the Wynn resort on the Las Vegas Strip, said that without specific information it would be difficult to identify wagering irregularities over the last two seasons.

NEW YORK –  The FBI is investigating allegations that veteran NBA referee Tim Donaghy bet on basketball games over the past two seasons, including ones in which he officiated.

NBA commissioner David Stern had long objected to putting a team in Las Vegas because it permits betting on basketball, though earlier this year allowed Mayor Oscar Goodman to submit a proposal to owners on how the city would handle wagering on a team if it moved there.

Markling, in Las Vegas, said he learned of the probe from news accounts.

“The allegations were new to us,” said Mark Clayton, a control board member

NHL awards expansion franchise to Las Vegas

We’ll leave no stone unturned in our dedication, in our pursuit of hockey for Las Vegas, not just for our team, but for the community.”

The National Hockey League’s 31st franchise will play in Las Vegas beginning in 2017, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced Wednesday.

With nearly 2.2 million people in the last census, Las Vegas is the largest population center in the U.S. Concerns about the Canadian dollar’s fluctuation, the stress of a two-team expansion draft and the league’s desire to correct its geographical imbalance — the Eastern Conference already has 16 teams, while Las Vegas will be the 15th in the West — prompted the governors to go with Las Vegas alone.

“There is no doubt as to the passion for hockey in Quebec City,” Bettman said. These components, the ones within the control of the Quebec City applicant, are first-rate.”

Foley realizes his team might not be alone in Vegas for long. without a team in the major professional sports. “I’m an Army guy, but maybe that’s not the right name for the team at this time. We’re going to work through the league.”

Sports leagues once rejected the city outright due to concerns about corruption from Vegas’ massive sports betting economy, but the NHL and the NFL no longer share those worries, with Bettman calling his sport “less susceptible” to gambling interests due to the small volume of bets placed on hockey.

Bettman said the league made the move largely due to the persistence and strength of the ownership group led by Foley, a financial services tycoon, who has been working on the idea for three years. He has strongly considered the Black Knights, a name that has special meaning to Foley, a West Point graduate.

Bettman strongly praised the bid backed by telecommunications giant Quebecor to return the league to Quebec City, the former home of the Quebec Nordiques. Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis is interested in partnering with Vegas interests to build an enormous domed football stadium for his team.

“I think the NFL would be great here,” Foley said. “We’re dedicated to it. “They have a different fan base than we do.

“We won’t sell out every game with season-ticket holders, but I believe it’s going to be 85 percent, 90 percent (filled by season ticket holders),” Foley said.

Foley’s also bid had the enormous advantage of an NHL-ready arena built with private funding and eager for a flagship tenant. Foley is joined by minority partners Joe and Gavin Maloof, the former owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

Although ice doesn’t last long in the desert, Las Vegas has had an appetite for hockey since the Kings and New York Rangers played a memorable outdoor exhibition game here in 1991. Foley announced plans to devote considerable resources to building community interest in youth hockey, including a two-rink team training complex that will be “open to all.”

“I love Black Knights,” Foley said. The IHL’s Las Vegas Thunder sometimes drew more fans than UNLV’s beloved basketball team at the Thomas and Mack Arena in the 1990s, and the Minnesota Wild’s Jason Zucker leads a handful of locals who went on to hockey careers.

On a 109-degree day in the Mojave Desert’s gambling mecca, the NHL’s Board of Governors awarded the team to billionaire businessman Bill Foley, who is expected to pay $500 million to the NHL’s other owners as an expansion fee. Vegas was an economic boomtown in the previous decade, and the NHL is betting that its slowed growth hasn’t curbed the city’s appetite for sports and spectacles.

Along with a top-six pick in next year’s draft, the Vegas franchise will be stocked by a June 2017 expansion draft that will be more favorable than previous drafts, theoretically allowing Foley’s team to become competitive more quickly. “There is no doubt as to the suitability of the Videotron Centre as a home for a team, and there is no doubt regarding the ownership credentials or the eagerness to own a team of Quebecor, which has been an outstanding partner. I don’t think it will affect us.”

“We want everyone to be a fan,” said Foley, who fell in love with pond hockey while growing up in Canada. The new team will play in T-Mobile Arena, the $375 million building that opened just off the Las Vegas Strip in April.

“We think this is a tremendously exciting opportunity, not just for Las Vegas, but for the league as well,” Bettman said, calling Las Vegas “a vibrant, growing, global destination city.”

The NHL is expanding for the first time since 2000, when Minnesota and Columbus each paid $80 million to join the league.

. Foley has already accepted more than 14,000 season ticket deposits and sold out all 44 suites in the 17,500-seat rink built by MGM Resorts International and Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Los Angeles Kings.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Bettman also announced that an expansion bid from Quebec City was “deferred” indefinitely, allowing Las Vegas to enter the league alone in the Pacific Division. Las Vegas will have four nearby rivals — at least by West Coast standards: the league’s three California teams and the Arizona Coyotes.

The endurance of that appetite will depend on Foley’s ability to keep fans excited about the newest show in town, but the NHL seems confident it’s getting in early to a growing market. The league’s alignment and playoff format won’t change.

Foley hasn’t decided on a nickname or logo for his team, but an announcement could be made in the next few weeks

NBA bets on winning back fans | Reuters

Over the last decade, none have been better at collecting championships than the San Antonio Spurs, who enter the new campaign seeking their fifth title in 10 years.

Referee Tim Donaghy’ admission he bet on games he officiated and passed on inside information to bookies has inflicted severe damage to the NBA’s credibility with the toll likely to mount as investigations continue.

The night’s other matchup will see two of the league’s marketing dynamos clash when Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers host Yao Ming and the Houston Rockets.

Trade rumors have once again started to circulate, the Chicago Bulls reportedly making another bid for Bryant.

After spending much of summer demanding a trade, Bryant is expected to be on the floor for the Lakers despite a wrist injury that kept him out of the team’s final exhibition contest.

The Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons also look ready to figure into the Eastern Conference battle.

In Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal the Miami Heat still pack the NBA’s best one-two punch and if the two all-stars can stay healthy another championship could be headed to South Florida.

San Antonio will be part of the opening night action against the Portland Trail Blazers and the Utah Jazz take on the Golden State Warriors.

While restoring integrity will be the NBA’s newest priority, the goal for the league’s 30 teams remains the same — winning a title.

Garnett, who came to Boston in a blockbuster trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves, joins Ray Allen and Paul Pierce in Beantown, instantly transforming the crumbling Celtics into championship contenders.

| NEW YORK

NEW YORK After a summer spent expanding its global brand with exhibition games from Shanghai to Rome, the NBA opens a new season on Tuesday looking to win back home fans following a gambling scandal which rocked the sport to its core.

Yao, however, could be in for some stiff competition off the court following the arrival of compatriot Yi Jianlian, who has hogged the international spotlight since the Milwaukee Bucks took the seven-footer with the sixth overall selection in this year’s draft.

The aging Spurs will have a familiar look with 12 players back from last year’s squad, former league and playoff MVP Tim Duncan leading an all-star international cast that includes Frenchman Tony Parker and Argentine Manu Ginobili.

NBA commissioner David Stern dismissed the incident as nothing more than a rogue employee but the league must now concentrate on regaining the confidence of American and Canadian fans instead of wooing interest abroad.

Stung by the failure, James dedicated himself to an off-season of intense training in his bid to guide the Cavaliers to the championship and secure his place among the game’s greats.

There appears, however, to be a new powerhouse taking shape in the Eastern Conference with 10-times all-star Kevin Garnett’s arrival in Boston.

The Phoenix Suns and their high-octane offence led by twice MVP Steve Nash, once again look the best in the West alongside the Spurs and Dallas Mavericks.

LeBron James is no stranger to the spotlight and is certain to be the focus of attention again after leading the Cavaliers to the NBA finals for the first time last year only to be swept in four games by the Spurs.

Since the Rockets made Yao the top selection in the 2002 NBA draft, the towering 7ft 6ins center has blossomed into one of the NBA’s most dominant players and one of world’s most recognizable athletes.

Sports betting vs. the stock market: Which is riskier?

“A large, steady company has a low chance of plummeting and causing you to lose all your money, but even Peyton Manning doesn’t cover the spread sometimes,” he said. For example, a stop-loss order instructs a broker to dump a stock when it tumbles below a specific price.

“Betting is more difficult and riskier,” said one resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, who bets on illegal gambling sites and also invests in stocks.

Gamblers and investors also have far different time horizons. People often invest in funds that buy dozens or even hundreds of stocks, which helps reduce the risk.

“You can hold onto your betting tickets all your life, but you’re not going to get squat,” said Stovall. Gambling on sports may be more fun, but it’s definitely a more risky use of money than putting it in the stock market.

That’s the percentage of time that Stovall’s research shows the S&P 500 — the gold standard in the stock market — has increased in value during the years since 1926.

Even the unlucky investors who jumped into the market at its peak in October 2007 eventually made their money back when stocks reclaimed their pre-recession levels in 2013. Gambling on football star Peyton Manning to win might seem like a safe bet, especially compared with picking winners in the stock market. He asked for his identity to be withheld due to legal concerns.

Investors also have the ability to spread their money out among many stocks.

All or nothing: Gambling on sports tends to be a zero-sum game.

The same can’t be said for those who bet big on the Denver Broncos last Super Bowl. And in neither instance can you be guaranteed to be correct,” said Randall Fine, managing director of The Fine Point Group, one of the casino industry’s largest consulting firms. The stock might go up and down some, but it typically doesn’t go to zero. While many stocks offer steady returns, investors sometimes hit the jackpot (think: buying Apple back in early 2009 or Tesla in 2012).

A stock can theoretically be held onto for an infinite amount of time, but a sports bet can end in the blink of an eye.

At the same time, investing in stocks actually carries higher upside potential.

And investors have greater access to tools that can minimize the risk of losing money.

“A lot of people regard investing as gambling, but I frequently say no.

“You’re making a wager based on some facts and some intuitions.

Manning is really, really good at what he does for a living.

Such hedging tools are not as readily or even feasible to sports gamblers, Fine said.

But don’t let those similarities fool you.

Those are pretty good odds.

To put it another way, the stock market is a lot more forgiving than the MGM Grand (let alone your local sports bookie). A bettor gambling on the Green Bay Packers will instantly lose his or her entire $500 bet if Aaron Rodgers and his teammates fail to win or cover the spread.

They both believe they can predict the future, and they sometimes fall into the trap of making decisions with their hearts instead of their brains.

In the long run, investors have the chance to make more money because there are fewer downside risks.

However, someone sinking $500 into Apple stock has little risk of losing that entire initial investment, especially in the short term. Which casino in Atlantic City, Las Vegas or Macau pays the bettor 73% of the time?” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at S&P Capital IQ.

But take it from one person who has lots of experience in both worlds. And of course, they both hate to lose.

5 Types Of Online Games

No doubt, the best available online games are the ones that allow minimal personal input from the user and allow free play, unless more participation is accepted and wanted by the user.

By: kizziewfknudson

“Battle Forge” is a card based strategy and MMOG game. Real online gambling can be fun too, however that is another topic that needs its own precautions and safeties.

2. First-person Shooter – Battle Forge

Almost all games that are extremely popular have moved from the two dimensional side scrolling action to full 3D, allowing the player to take full advantage of their hardware and play in amazingly rendered environments.

5. Racing/Simulation

3. Adult/Gambling/Erotic

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com.

There are various resources for finding and playing an assortment of online games available to the web crawler today. Games like “Battle forge” and “Battlefield Heroes” for example, allow the players to join and play for free, with “perks” being the addition of customizations purchased from the developers for points, in exchange for money; much like Microsoft’s point system. “Battlefield Heroes” is a first person / MMOG game that has evolved to incorporate role-playing and customization to enhance the online experience of the players as well as provide them with a unique online presence.

An example of an interesting 3d adult online games are hentai games

MMOG or (Massively Multiplayer Online Games) are extremely popular and you can now join for free and play many of them. The 5 basic game types available online to the web crawler to enjoy are;

1. MMOG (Massively Multiplayer Online Game)/role-playing

4. Puzzle/Strategy

Adult/gambling/erotic games are also gaining ground online, as most things in this genre live on the web these days. Any gambling game that allows you to play for an imaginary amount of money is a great site to rid yourself of those gambling urges.

Gambling games are self explanatory. Some developers realized that there are adults who surf the web and may need a fifteen minute break here and there. These hybrid games are evolving because the niches for a specific brand is small and many players look for as many facets of gaming in one source to enjoy. A great example of a quick and fun online game in many of the above genres including racing and simulation are the games provided to Facebook by Zynga games. Companies are growing ever more aware of the increasing popularity of online gaming seeing that many web users are taking full advantage, playing and entertaining themselves online.

Racing/simulation games are often one and the same as a hybrid racing game and most online games allow you to customize your vehicle, race, earn cash, gas, and other strategic factors to play their game. However not all adult games have to be raunchy and distasteful. Games like strip poker, date games and other 3D anime/hentai like games are very popular for the 18+ crowd. These online games are quick and fun to play and are simple yet addicting.

In the multi-billion dollar industry of gaming, online games have a real small place in which to grow, however their presence remains ever expanding and there are always going to be new and fancier games almost daily to locate and play on the expanse known to the world as the “web”

Sports Betting Odds by Benered Fransisco

The main basis of the wager is the straight up outcome, which is not in to a point spread.

In sports betting odds, the odds are made not by the common people. This field is considered as a way to make huge profits if the person is a smart bettor who has practiced proper money management. In sports betting odds, the odds are termed as “MONEYLINE”.The sports betting odds there are no point spread for many of the sports such as boxing, tennis etc as there occur no way to measure the points or score in which the player wins or loses by. In such sports like boxing, the only thing that counts is who wins and who loses, and in such cases, the money line wagering enters in!

In college, also sports betting odds have taken reign even though it might be considered illegal by many. Money line in sports betting odds is decided by the event winner with no regard to the point spread as there is occurs no point spread. But even then, there occur many loopholes through which people play their own gaming!

In sports betting line, money line is like point spread that is used to equal the attractiveness of the favorite and the underdog for the person betting. And most of the illegal books of Nevada draw their odds from casinos. The sports betting odds makers set the money line, as more money must be risked for the favorite or the person expected to win and very less on the underdog or the person more likely to lose, so that there occurs a balance between both sides of the contest.

Sports betting odds can be defined as “the likelihood of an outcome occurring that is stated in a number form”. In sports betting odds, such as football odds is becoming more vibrant each year. In sports betting odds, there are many things, which are illegal such as transmitting information on gambling across the state for placing, or taking bets is considered illegal. The bookies set a lot of numbers by keeping the public in mind and the person who begins to study can understand easily as to how the person can gain more and on the numbers set by the bookies. . It is an entirely different case in sports betting odds, as about 75% of odds are established for the licensed Sports Books in Nevada as well as for Oregon State Lottery by Las Vegas Sports Consultant Inc, which is run by Michael ‘Roxy” Roxborough. Apart from this, he also works as a consultant on gaming management, strategies, personnel and marketing

Do Horse Racing Betting Systems Work? by Martin Blacksheep

He lays the complete betting system out before you, why bet on favorites and why for a place? The answer… it’s so easy that at times it feels almost unfair.

Let me assure you that the betting system is written in plain English and it’s easy enough for a 11 year old to use. What he’s referring to is consistently profiting week after week and year after year from punting. What you end up with is a set of very secure favorites that have an extremely high chance of winning. It is theoretically possible to make a consistent profit on investing in high priced non favorites at the track. Its simply a matter of consistently following the betting system.

Don’t get me wrong. However investing on certain favorites that have passed a set of Ali’s betting system rules will definitely set the odds in your favor in a very big way!

There are lots of so called Horse Racing betting systems out there. Its already been extensively used in America, Hong Kong, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, UK and most of Europe for over 13 years by thousands of people. I’ve been ripped off before with horse racing betting systems so I understand exactly where you’re coming from. With How to ‘Place Bets’ on Favorites for a Living , you don’t need any prior horse betting or statistics knowledge. This is a betting system that really delivers.

Horse Racing Betting Systems – Do they Work?. The word here is lucky, in the long run they will certainly lose money. Few betting systems deliver on what they promise. I can say in all honesty that as a former frustrated punter it is well worth the time checking out this information. In the limited space I have available in this article there’s no way I can fully convince you about how much you can learn from this guys betting system. The majority of punters that lose money on horse racing try to make big sums of money from just a few dollars. Its safe, quick and easy… The guy shows you how he maintained a win strike rate of 89.52% and a place strike rate of 96.35% using his own betting system.

Ali’ betting system can be applied to any gallop horse race in the world. For a betting system, believe me, that’s pretty revolutionary!

So the Horse racing betting system in a nutshell goes something like this:-

He answers the questions of why place betting on favorites is simply the quickest way to profit from horse racing betting. First off all let me clarify something, when he talks about making money from horse racing betting, he’s not talking about a few freak or lucky wins in a month. Does anyone really have the spare time to do this consistently? Call me lazy but why make things hard for yourself betting on hard to pick non favorites when you can very, very easily profit from the favorites!

Everyone knows that the favorites have a high chance of winning a race right? What Ali’s system does is to select only certain types of favorites that have even a much higher chances of winning. The twist is, you don’t even bet for a win! By betting for a place only you dramatically increase the odds in your favor.

I recently came across Mohammed Ali’s Betting system, How to ‘Place Bets’ on Favorites for a Living. Occasionally they will get lucky and succeed. Plus it takes only 10-20 minutes to use on any race day. When you bet on well priced non-favorites, you are effectively betting against the odds. Most never even try a betting system, something which is essential to actually make a consistent profit on horse betting.

If you want to be shown a step-by-step outline of exactly how you can use Ali’s betting system, How to ‘Place Bets’ on Favorites for a Living, to consistently earn an income from horse racing betting, then head on over to the website at http://www.horsebetpro.com

He then put these horses through a set of betting system simple rules to eliminate any risks they may be carrying. You’ve sent away for stuff that never quite reached you, or you bought something and it didn’t live up to its expectations. Doing it this way is going to take you 18 hours a day of research just to figure out which horses may produce the goods. Also why place betting on favorites is the safest and easiest way to profit from horse racing betting. Ok now don’t go all skeptical on me at this point

CNN – ESPN book debates a century of sports

EDT (1808 GMT)

By Jamie Allen

CNN Interactive Senior Writer

(CNN) — The sport of watching sports, for those who don’t know much about sports, is really the debate of it all. He realizes that his picks might not top the ultimate ESPN list — Jackson is not even offered in the network’s Top 20 — but he thinks he used a different scale to appraise athletes.

”I did not choose necessarily on the basis of significance,” says Schaap. They changed the face of sports. Couch potatoes and bar patrons tuning in to the latest televised contest inevitably battle it out over who is the greatest boxer, the greatest baseball team, the greatest golfer or the greatest quarterback.

And then there’s the ultimate debate: Who is the greatest athlete of all time?

Trying to compare competitors from different athletic endeavors — Muhammad Ali and Jim Thorpe, Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth, Bo Jackson and, uh, Bo Jackson — proves a nearly impossible task.

”If you have a vote for the most significant athlete, then you have Ali, then you have Babe Ruth, then you have Michael Jordan. Unitas sort of represented that.”

’Who would win most?’

So, who did Schaap vote as his greatest athlete ever? Let the debate begin. But I voted purely on what I considered to be athletic ability, and if I had anything in the back of my mind it was, ‘If you put these guys on a field and they played each other in 20 sports, who would win the most?’ I think Jim Brown would win the most, and I think Chamberlain would be awfully close.”

’I love the controversy of it’

The ESPN pick that caused the biggest grumble from sports fans was No. The athlete ranked in that spot: Secretariat, the 1973 Triple Crown winner. “People came out of the war years with great hope and great faith in the future. Even if I didn’t think he should be up that high, I like the controversy it created.”

But Schaap points out that the list has another source of contention.

”We are limiting it to North Americans,” he says. The compendium, published by Hyperion, features recollections on the sports century that was by top writers and sportscasters, including Dick Schaap, Joyce Carol Oates, Chris Berman, David Halberstam, Roy Blount Jr., and Thomas Boswell.

The book is divided into decades, with at least one athlete highlighted as the defining athlete of that time period. It seems some thought the list should only list human athletes.

”I think anybody is entitled to vote for whomever they want, and I think Secretariat does qualify as an athlete,” says Schaap. 35. So far, they’ve reached No. “If you have a vote for the most significant athlete, then you have Ali, then you have Babe Ruth, then you have Michael Jordan. Fighter Jack Johnson, for instance, represents the 1900s; basketball star Michael Jordan defines the 1990s.

In decades between, readers will find lengthy pieces on Jim Thorpe, Babe Ruth, Joe Louis and Babe Didrikson, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, Johnny Unitas, Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali, and Pete Rose.

”I think it’s a labor of love for everybody who was involved with it,” says Schaap, the author of several sports books, the former editor of Sports Magazine and current host of ESPN’s “Sports Reporters.” Schaap, who praised ESPN’s Mark Shapiro for organizing the book, writes about Unitas. 14; the top athlete remains a mystery, though the list has been narrowed to a chosen few.

And to compliment the show, the sports network that started in 1979 has released a new book by the same title. “(But) I wouldn’t have voted him very high. news

But as any sports fan knows, ESPN has been trying to do just that with its ongoing series, “ESPN SportsCentury.” The network, using the opinions of sports reporters, authors, academics and observers, is counting down its top 100 athletes of all time. Schaap says the former Baltimore Colts quarterback, like many athletes, has become a symbol of the era in which he played.

”I always thought of him as a stoic, solid person, that I think was typical of that era of the 1950s,” says Schaap.

”My top three were Jim Brown, Wilt Chamberlain and Bo Jackson,” says Schaap. “We don’t have Pele in there. My complaint was that he only played one sport.

”I also love the controversy of it. So we missed Pele, but we had Secretariat.”

And the debates continue.
